A journey to fight cancer is never like a set of steps to follow and you will end up with a smile. Its always a torture because cancer is very unpredictable and uncanny disease most of the time you hardly get to know until it becomes lethal.
I went through a lifetime experience in last three years and that changed my life altogether. I will never forget the afternoon of 18 June 2007. I was enjoying pleasant weather of Bangalore on the terrace of my office building. My phone rang and that moment changed the way I spent my life further.
Rectum cancer was behind my dad's illness, which was continuing from last 4-5 months. We tried many doctors but no one had diagnosed until we approached All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), New Delhi. Late diagnosis is one of the main reason behind increased death toll by cancer in India. Earlier diagnosis would have increased survival chance of my dad. At the time of diagnosis cancer was in stage III.

We tried many therapies conventional and non-conventional. During this process I met many people, some of them were genuinely helping but others were just cashing our situation. Through this blog I will try to give fair opinion about the treatment we tried. That may help patient to take right decision.
Preventions:
Lets start with reason behind increased cancer threat and why masses are feeling threatened. I asked same question to oncology surgeon during the period of my dad's treatment. His answer made me realize that we can't pin point to one specific reason behind cancer. It is cumulative affect of our day to day activities. As per his suggestion if we improvise our daily habits, we can decrease the chances of cancer. Below I am mentioning some changes in usual lifestyle and the lifestyle having those activity, I called that as Green Lifestyle for the reference in this blog.
Treatments:
As I mentioned earlier late diagnosis is one of the prominent reason behind increase in death toll in India. Few developed countries do diagnose most of the cancer disease in either stage I or stage II. But in developing country like India, we don't have such qualified processes at place to diagnose early stage cancer and even people do not practice good medical habit like regular check-ups etc. Diagnosis is very important step of cancer treatment. Its timing is directly proportional to survival of patient. Early diagnosis means better survival chance.
In dad's case, it was a late diagnosis and done through Biopsy. Biopsy is the most practiced diagnosis process in India or may be all-over the world. Based on Biopsy report we consulted 3 hospitals(Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai, AIIMS New Delhi, Dhramsheel Cancer Hospital New Delhi) for treatment procedure and doctors from all three hospitals came up with almost a similar treatment procedure and I believe that was the standard procedure to be followed for stage III cancer.
Treatment procedure suggested was to go through 25 sitting of Radiotherapy with one month course of oral chemotherapy to reduce size of tumor then a surgery to remove tumor and final step was 6 cycle of chemotherapy.
Now the next question was that in which hospital we should start treatment? Since everywhere similar treatment procedure had to be followed so we rejected TMC on the basis of logistic, AIIMS was not ready to start treatment before one month. So finally we moved to Dharmsheela Cancer Hospital. It was quite expensive but we had no choice.
The whole course of treatment took 10 months to complete. It took another 2 to 3 months for him to recover from side effect of chemotherapy. He was quite well when we had another set back in the month of June 2008 after knowing another tumor growing in Left Lobe of Liver. Then we started trying unconventional treatment methods such as Ayurveda, Touch therapy, A Medicine Claiming to Cure Cancer, Rituals Believes & Faiths, Cyclotron Treatment, Medicine of D.S. Research Centre Banaras and Wave Therapy. Only few of above mentioned really helped us to some extent but none of them really worked 100% as per their claim. I will come to each treatment methods separately and give a fair opinion based on my experience. I hope that may help people to take informed decision. And they can avoid mistakes which we did either due to lack of information or false hope.
All treatment methods continued till Oct 2009. Dad became completely bed ridden and was unable to stand because of tumor growth in spinal cord as well as in bones of other part of body. At the end of Oct 2009 there were around 9 tumors in his body. That made his body partially paralyzed. He was completely dependent on Morphin for pain relief and doctor called that as a termination stage. And finally termination stage ended on early hours of 6th Dec 2009 with few rounds of hospital giving him relief from all his pain and worries of life.

Touch Therapy: Touch therapy is not very popular among people. It works on the philosophy of balancing energy of your body. Its assumption of disease starts with negative energy surpasses the positive energy of body and then we need external force to balance them.
Mr. Mulkraj Das is a very respected personality in Massoorie India. People say he is having god gift ability to soak negative energy of body to cure your disease. He has cured many paralyzed people as well as many other disease. He is having frequent visitors from many places of India. In my father's cases we didn't find it very effective. As per my dad's statement he didn't feel any change in his body. So we didn't continue for long just returned back. He treats you free of cost except registration fee and that was around Rs. 300 at that time.
Ayurveda: A Kamlnath Baba Ashram located nearby Alwar in Rajsthan. We got to know about this Ashram through someone. And we visited this place right away after Massoorie trip. The Ashram treats people free of cost and provides medicine from their own fund. I should agree that many people got benefited from this noble effort including me. I met few people there who got completely cured by these medicine. We had benefit from these medicine and it improved quality of life after chemotherapy. Based on my experience people should give it a try. Early stage cancer patient have fair chance of recovery.

Drive along NH8 towards Manesar. Once you reach Daruheda leave NH8 and switch to Alwar highway. You keep driving straight towards Alwar, you will reach near Tijara. That is a circle and from circle continue on Alwar highway. A just 10 KM drive and you will reach Bhindusa. Bhindusa is very small village market. Take right turn from Bhindusa and go along the road, you will reach Ashram. You can ask anybody about Kamalnath Baba Ashram, they will guide you.
A Medicine Claiming to Cure Cancer: It was Medicine of Munir Khan from Mumbai, who was claiming to cure cancer by his own developed medicine. I paid him Rs 16000/- for 100 ml. His office sent me a 100 ml bottle without any label and it was completely a waste.
Rituals Believes & Faiths: We drove to a place called Baggar in Rajsthan after being informed by one of our known. The Kuan Dham placed in Baggar and lots of people have great faith in prayer done at that Dham. I met few people who travelled from Delhi. But we didn't feel any improvement in our case so we didn't make second visit.
Cytotron Therapy: I got to know about this through advertisement made on television. We followed it through internet and found origin of this treatment in one of the lab situated in Bangalore. I spoke to them and found this treatment is in very early stage and scientist were doing their trials. We decided to give it a try. We tried to get treatment done in Lab but was refused and directed to Dr. Sibia Clinic in Ludhiana Panjab. My father stayed in Ludhiana more than a month for treatment. We paid Dr Sibia Rs. 100000/- for treatment excluding MRIs and accommodation cost. We didn't find this helpful and tumor size kept increasing. I met one lady patient from Dhanbad who died in few weeks after she got discharged from clinic. I feel this treatment would be working theoretically but practically I don't find it effective.
Medicine from D.S. Research Centre Banaras: A pack of Ayurvedic Medicine on the cost of Rs 3800/- for 14 days. I heard about many people who were getting treatment from there and improving. We continued medicine for 3 months but no improvement. At the same time my dad's condition was degrading day by day and finally he reached in a condition where he was not in position gulp medicine.
Wave Therapy: I don't want to write much about this treatment. The person who was claiming to have developed wave therapy through a long year of research was doing treatment through few magnets. He usually charge Rs 650 for a sitting but once he got know that we are in helpless condition he raised his charge to Rs. 2500/- per sitting. We had no choice except give it a try. We tried but no help just waste of money. I think there should be some law at place to stop this kind cheat from helpless patient. Anyways moving further.
Kalyan Banerjee: It was too late and my dad's body was completely paralyzed when we started his medicine. I feel there would have been some positive effect if we would have tried his treatment in early stage. Treatment is not costly here. Approx Rs. 300 for 8 days medicine.
During all non-conventional treatments we were always in touch with oncology doctor. I suggest to always consult your doctor before trying anything. And take informed decision. That is the whole purpose of this blog. You should keep your mindset positive.

I am very sorry for your loss Rakesh. As mentioned poor diagnostic tools is the main cause of increased death rate due to cancer in India. If detected in early stage the tissue injured would be removed hoping not leave any trace material which might regenerate cancer again. Being a research scholar I would say there can never be a complete cure for cancer. It’s not one molecule that triggers this stage that we could track it and eliminate. If we try suppressing one factor that might be an adjuvant for another hence trigger a cascade which could lead to the malfunction of something which could trigger cancer. Its a mystery what could be the key factor of all these pathways………if we find this alpha factor, if at all we have a single molecule and not multiple ones then it might shed some light in the field of cancer. Until then it’s the old school principle which should be followed “Prevention is better that cure”. It’s the only solution for any disease. Say, someone had undergone a kidney transplant, then we administer several immuno suppressive drugs to make the transplant successful. This conditional situation in the body could cause a simple symptom into a nightmare due to the cascade malfunction mentioned above. So the best we could do is to lead a healthy lifestyle and to get ourselves checked up every 6months.Try influencing others as well to do so. Being educated and aware of the situation is better we try to execute them sooner.

ReplyDeletesorry for your loss.infact i have just come from baba kamal nath's asharam and feel that the medicines given by him (3 pouches ) are really effective and has a positive effect. they use expensive ingredients such as rudraksh for the medicine and do not charge a single rupee. a lot of people do not believe but he is a genuine person and at 115 years (his age) he has done enough for the society. he does not accept or even touch money, will only accept offerings of fruits or something the volunteers can eat.

ReplyDeleteWe went with D S Research too ..... don't think it works in more that 10% of cases and that too at an initial stage or so ..... a better bet in initial stages is Madhu Kaka ki Wadi, next to Umbargam Railway Station(Gujarat), closer from Mumbai.
He gives free medicine .... a sea weed that I have seen work for 2 people.

DeleteImportant Rules while trying out cancer cures especially alternate ones.
ReplyDelete1. First try out cures very seriously and as directed. Anything that does not work for 2 months thereafter has to be discarded .... do not cling to hope. Vital signs to look for are increase in weakness, lack of appetite, decrease in digestion, incoherent functioning of brain and general irritability.
2. Try out cures which have some semblance of formal recognition.
For eg., we missed out on the Tibetan medicine (recommended for diagnostic sense which usually is lacking elsewhere) and Padaav.com (recommended because Vaidya Balendu Prakash served on a high powered alternative cure committee)
3. With allopathy, take on a dose of liver protective ayurved medicines like Liv52. Important as drugs are metabolised in the liver. One might do so with advice from a formally trained ayurved doctor and not necessarily with the approval of an allopathic one (they can be dismissive of anything that is not mainstream medicine .... even when some dubious chemo drugs have been approved in the West if they can keep cancer out for 28 days only!)
4. MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you have found anyhthing that can keep cachexia (wasting of body due to burning of nutrition) out, you have virtually found half a cure. So keep going with that medicine at all costs. Living another day will give you a better chance at a cure.
5. Worship your ancestors and DEMAND a complete cure, nothing less (my personal addition based on what I have been reading recently .... might work, who knows?!)

A year later after the treatment her disease has progressed to brain. doctors have predicted a 3-9 month balance life for her. feels like hell to listen this from doctors but as a caring son i will try my best to save her. Read about Kamal Nath baba ashram on your blog so i m thinking of giving it a try as the place is also nearby to my brother's in-laws place. i will visit the place some time and get the medicines from there, who knows it might just work. thanks for mentioning!

My Father had been diagonised two weeks back for metastatic periampullary carcinoma which is inoperable.
What really shocked us apart from the diseased is a statement from a very reputed allopath doctor that there in no treatment now and chemo +radiation might help and we cannot expect more than six months of life.We are looking now only for a miracle which can save my father's life.We have already started Baba KailashNath Ji's medicine and here I must say that when you go to his ashram and talk to people over there, coming from varied places and taking the medicine, you start feeling hope.We will go for Chemo probably next week.I will keep posting here and yes hope is the only weapon with which you fight with cancer.

DeleteI am also passing through such a difficult time as my wife is facing the challenging stage of cancer, though she took continuous treatment from a prestigious cancer institute and unfortunately had recurrence of cancer after two months that we were told about her satisfactory progress and were asked to visit for follow up after one year. The schedule of treatment was followed religiously. But.... Any way the treatment from the same institute continues. Some one told about the ashram of Baba Kamal Nath ji. We brought Baba Kamalnath's medicine for my grandmother in Dec and now in March the doctors have told us it is the end for her. I do not know how this medicine works, but I feel the medicine would work for some types of cancers and not others. Just wanted to share my two cents in case anyone was interested in how the prognosis went for her.

Doctor called us after 4 weeks for surgery(removing impacted part of esophagus).
My father has become very very weak due to an operation done 3 moths back and side effects of chemo.

I had 9cm tumours in both the ovaries which were surgically removed and in the process the ovaries were safely reconstructed. I have treatment ongoing at AIIMs. Currently completed 2nd cycle of chemo with little side effects lasting barely for 5 to 6 days. I'm pretty "healthy" comparative to the stage i'm at. I haven't lost any weight since the beginning of my diagnosis. My mum came to know about baba kamalnath ashram and she wants me to give it a try. Can you please explain me how the medicine work and if it is really beneficial as the ashram is far away and the journey can be tiring and upsetting if it results in vain. As I mentioned in blog, in case of my father we realized tumor growth was slowed with the help of Ashram's medicine though it was totally not cured.
Your lifestyle and food habit going to play a important role in recovery. And the best way to fight cancer is to let body fight itself by improving body immune system. So, try whatever you can do to improve immunity. You can practice yoga, meditation, positive thinking, these will really help your treatment. If you wish you can also use food supplement to improve immunity.

ReplyDeleteI'm an optimistic person and love my life. My mum, she is very particular about my eating/sleeping habits so i'm good on that side. I have been doing yoga since the age of 7 and follow a healthy diet. I don't drink or smoke either. Everyone who knows me are shocked to know about my illness. Even after 2 rounds of chemo i look more healthy than the normal people in appearance. This is just a bad road, hope it gets over soon. Still fighting 😊

My mother is recently(last month) diagnosed with Gall Bladder cancer and we have starter her treatment in RGCI Delhi but she is continued suffering from fever since last month. Doctors is not able to start Chemotherapy untill fever goes down and they said after all procedure 3 chemo-surgery-3 chemo my mother has 2-3 yr of life. We have consulted with many doctors in AIIMS, MAX, BLK etc.. but all have same answer and same treatment. So we are planning to go BABA KAMALNATH ASHRAM. I got to know very positive outcome from there. But my question is that they provide Ayurvedic medicines and my mother is very weak now So I have doubt that Is she able to take ayurvedic medicine as these medicine are very hard to take? And another one is that with ayurvedic medicines should we start chemo at side by side?

I was diagnosed of lung cancer in 2011 and the doctor (oncologist), because i was a chronic smoker who started smoking from 16 and told me i had just two years to live that my lungs had been damaged, that even on the best medication i still had two years. This week my mother-in-law has been diagnosed with liver cancer, stage III metastasis at Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Hyderabad. She is 59 years old and highly diabetic. ReplyDeleteHi Rakesh..My mother was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer 3 months ago..we went for 3 rounds of chemotherapy and now scan showed that tumor in pancreas is stable but another tumor in Live is seen..doctor at Dharamshila hospital is saying surgery is not an option and we can give healthy life to patient by chemotherapy..but we observed my mother became very week during chemo sessions and now after chemo is over she feels much better and energetic..we are confused whether to go for another round of chemo or just go with some ayurvedic treatment..can you please suggest..she has started taking white grass liquid from patanjali as well..it has helped her digestion and improved appetite..

ReplyDeleteSimilar stories from all people and equally painful to read and feel..... loosing loved ones are really very painful...specially Parents who did everything to raise us and now expected the same from there kids to do the same....but helplessly we keep fighting with this deadly disease called CANCER. My fight started when my mother got detected with Colon Cancer in March 2016 and I straightaway went to Apollo Chennai for her surgery with a hope that getting it done from best place can atleast decrease the chances of relapse. All in vain when we came to know that after 6 months the cancer relapsed and now it has effected her Lungs and Liver with Metastasis. Hi Deepthi, My mother is having stage 4 lung cancer,since an year. She is on targeted therapy. I started Simarouba since 2 months for her. She takes it 2 times a day.But things seems to be worsened recently like breathlessness issues. So , wanted to know does Simarouba causes any side effects and how long does it take to be effective. Hi All, my mother in age of 74 identified with breast cancer. We are 4 siblings. 3 of them would like to treat her through herbal treatment given by Vellan Vaidyar at Wayanad Karela.
